European Union
The European Union, established in 1993 by the Maastricht Treaty, is the political and economic union of 27 European states. Collectively, the EU has the world's largest economy and is the largest importer of combustible fuels. Although the European Union's progress has been strong since its inception with the development of the new Euro currency, in recent years, the European Union has been weakened due to economic recessions in Member States such as Greece and Hungary and the declining value of the Euro. Coupled with a demographic crisis due to an aging population, the EU's economic stability is in jeopardy, which compromises the EU's regional integration.
