About CIMUN
The Cairo International Model United Nations was founded in 1989 by a group of ambitious AUC students under the guidance and support of the Provost of AUC, Professor Earl Tim Sullivan, during his time as a professor in the department of political science. Since then, CIMUN has been setting new standards for all to follow. The CIMUN program is an integral part of student life at AUC being the oldest student activity on campus and is currently recognized as one of the largest inter-collegiate Model United Nations program outside of North America. Its annual March conference is now the largest of its kind in the Middle East. The primary goal is to increase student interest in and awareness of the United Nations and international affairs.
Not only does CIMUN pursue these goals through its sessions and annual conference, but also through our Development, Awareness , and environmental Programmes that aim to teach students how to be active in their communities through a focus on sustainable development rather than charity.
The Cairo International MUN annual conference is considered to be the most important annual event on campus. The CIMUN Opening Ceremony is the only event that the AUC president has to attend every year, beside the graduation ceremonies. Moreover, several ambassadors, diplomats and public figures attend our Opening Ceremony every. The list of previous keynote speakers at our opening include former Secretary General of the UN H.E. Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the UN H.E. Boutros Boutros Ghali, Secretary General of the Arab League H.E. Amr Moussa, Egypt’s First Lady H.H. Suzanne Mubarak, and former judge at the International Court of Justice H.E. Nabil El Etribi. Students from world's most prestigious universities have participated in CIMUN, including Yale, Columbia, and Concordia.
CIMUN also participates in the National Model United Nations in New York, and has been awarded the first place (Outstanding delegation) twice , in the last NMUN conference (2010) representing the Egyptian delegation and the first time was in 2006 when CIMUN represented South Africa. Also CIMUN has been awarded "Distinguished delegation" in 2007 representing Brazil.
