Security Council

The United Nations Security Council is the furnace of hard politics and diplomacy on the globe. It held its first session in 1946 shortly after the creation of the United Nations as an international organization. It is responsible for the promotion and maintenance of international peace and security. The Security Council saw a lot of developments during the course of its history to reach the contemporary arrangement of its 5 permanent and 10 non-permanent members. The five permanent members are the United States, the United Kingdom, the Russian Federation, the French Republic, and the People’s Republic of China. The other ten members rotate between the other countries of the United Nations, and serve for two-year terms. What is unique about the Security Council is the veto power of its 5 permanent member whereby a single “No” from any of them denies the rest of the council a resolution and all the decisions it contains! The Security Council is also the only council in the United Nations authorized with the use of force against any entity that represents a threat to international peace and security. Who decides what represents a threat? Who decides how to deal with this threat? Are states the only threats? This is what Security Council in CIMUN ’12 is all about!
