Human Rights Council

The concept of human rights dates long back in history, thus the United Nations has been formally addressing human rights violations since 1946, only one year after the UN came to being. The UN first did this through the Commission on Human Rights (CHR). However, it showed limited success and consequently the United Nations General Assembly later created the Human Rights Council on March 15th 2006 to replace its less successful predecessor (CHR).  The HRC is a body within the UN system with the purpose of addressing situations of human rights violations and making recommendations towards how these issues can be tackled. The HRC consists of 47 Member States who are responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the world.
